Guns of Labrador Team Challenge

Description of Programme

The NExtgen Immersive Experience is designed to impart and inspire the National Education (NE) messages to the next generation of participants in Singapore through location-based mobile technology.

In the Guns of Labrador Team Challenge, participants will be able to explore the various locations in Labrador, learn interesting facts about them while engaging with fun and meaningful activities including games, the collection of AR collectibles and more through LDR's award winning ‘Locomole’ mobile application.

Learning Objective / Total Defence Pillars

With 85,000 soldiers, a fleet of tanks, and state-of-the-art gun batteries, Singapore was considered to be an impregnable fortress. Despite all of this, Singapore fell to the Japanese in World War II. On this trail, participants will be able to retrace the footsteps of brave soldiers who defended Singapore during her darkest days by exploring our battle sites. With the preservation of such sites, participants can get up-close and personal with these artifacts while gaining deep insights on the boons and banes of our military defence.

British War Strategy

Discover the British strategy in defending Singapore during colonial time, however, it also revealed its inadequacy – e.g. pillboxes were not built due to their high costs. Enemies were assumed to only attack Singapore from the coastal line and much of Singapore was left unprotected. These mistakes resulted in the quick humiliating fall of Singapore.

Modern Warfare - Economic & Cyber Defence
The Pillbox was Singapore’s first line of Coastal Defence. Modern warfare has changed much – with the connectivity of the world through the cyberspace, a warfare might happen via cyberspace first! Our first line of defence today occurs in cyber space – we must therefore adopt good cyber-security practices like securing our internet-connected devices and networks.

Psychological Warfare
Despite the military strategy of the British army, and the tough fight put up by the alliance and civilian armies, Singapore fell within days of the Japanese attacks because the British surrendered quickly. The key takeaway for our participants and an important lesson to be learned by leaders of Singapore – that to win a war, we must build up psychological defense, so that the SAF and our civilians will have the resolve to defend what is ours.
