City Challenge (Interactive Battlefield Trail and Singapore River)

Description of Programme

The NExtgen Immersive Experience is designed to impart and inspire the National Education (NE) messages to the next generation of participants in Singapore through location-based mobile technology.

In the City Challenge, participants will be able to explore the various locations in Singapore’s Civic District, learn interesting facts about them while engaging with fun and meaningful activities including games, the collection of AR collectibles and more through LDR's award winning ‘Locomole’ mobile application.

Learning Objective / Total Defence Pillars

Through the civic district, participants will learn about the price of unpreparedness, the vagaries of being defeated, the horrors of war, the indomitable human spirit of our National Heroes, and understanding Singapore's National Resolution.

Participants will learn how the Japanese attempted to publicly humiliate the defeated military forces by assembling them right at the Padang and forcing them to march 22km to their own Prisoner Of War camps in Changi Prison and Salarang Barracks through the major villages of Singapore. Participants will also discover how certain civic buildings, schools, and clubhouses that were not bombed out were converted into makeshift hospitals and other facilities during the war.

General Yamashita's Strategy
How he was able to cause the collapse of the British Defence posture and extract an unconditional-surrender term from the British High Command in less than 6 days, through his clever application of maneuver warfare strategy.

Impact of the War on Civilians
How law and order broke down in the city area when the British indicated their unconditional surrender to the Japanese by flying the Japanese flag on top of Cathay Building and how 50,000 civilians were massacred in Singapore through the conduct of the Sook-Ching Operation by the Kempeitai.
