Description of Programme

The NExtgen Immersive Experience is designed to impart and inspire the National Education (NE) messages to the next generation of participants in Singapore through location-based mobile technology.

In the Birth of a Nation, participants will be able to explore the various locations around Singapore River, learn interesting facts about them while engaging with fun and meaningful activities including games, the collection of AR collectibles and more through LDR's award winning ‘Locomole’ mobile application.

Learning Objective / Total Defence Pillars

Fondly dubbed the 'Heart of Singapore', the Singapore River is the birthplace and the heart of trade and economic activity in Singapore. From Singapore’s beginnings as a fishing village to the establishment of Singapore as an international trading port during the Colonial Era, to the modern city that it is today, much of Singapore’s transformation has its roots in the Singapore River. The Singapore River story of change and continuity brings up valuable lessons for students. Participants will gain insights into the economic importance of the Singapore River in past and learn to appreciate the shifting environment of the river and its banks through the physical changes that have taken place.

The trail also allows the participants to explore the changing economic, social, historical, geographical, and cultural landscapes of the Singapore River and the British’s open reliance on a strong military force at the river to protect its commercial interests right from the onset.

Power of Vision
The initial vision of Singapore being a British trading hub has been successfully expanded by another visionary, Mr Lee Kuan Yew who had since gone on to re-establish Singapore as a major global financial hub, petrol-chemical hub, wealth management hub, business hub, education hub, science, research & technology hub, shopping hub, entertainment hub, arts and culture hub etc.

Foundation for Multiracial Singapore
The seeds of multi-racial Singapore, which was sown by Sir Stamford Raffles had allowed Singaporeans to practice racial harmony and multiculturalism for almost 200 years, making the fabric of Singapore's demographic as one of the most unique in the world.

Transformation of Singapore River
The River had successfully transformed itself from a near-death, a heavily congested and polluted condition in the 1960s to become a beautiful promenade, a city reservoir, and a bustling new downtown in Marina Bay today, through a change of people's mental model for the use of the river in the Clean River project initiated by MM Lee Kuan Yew in 1980.

Military Forts by Singapore River
The presence of two military forts by the river, Fort Fullerton, right at the river’s mouth and Fort Canning, right on top of the highest natural feature dominating Singapore River, and a strong SAF today, continues to underscore the fact that no economic growth is possible without the presence of a strong military force.
